Living with a dachshund puppy can be exhilarating! It can be exasperating! It is a joyful experience. A dachshund puppy is full of energy, bounce, and curiosity! This dog breed not only likes to be with people, but will insist on sticking their nose into the middle of every project. They like to know what is going on and want to be a central part of any activity. Dachshunds are a strong character packaged into a compact body. They are loyal and caring, but can be stubborn about getting their own way. Independence is part of their makeup. Dachshunds prefer to do things when they choose to and not when you tell them. This dog is a burrower and a digger. Nothing suits a dachshund more than to cuddle with their human under a warm, soft blanket. Tracking scents is part of their ingrained programming. Walking them on a leash can be important. Without the constraint, a dachshund may take off, nose to the ground, following an animal trail. With the intensity of their hunt, they may not even look back. Dachshunds enjoy new adventure. Traveling can be fun with them because of their joy in new discoveries. A dachshund can be curious, curious, curious. They have short legs, but can run faster than an energetic child. A dachshund can hold a very hurtful look at a scolding—and they may even hold a grudge for a while. This dog breed comes in miniature and standard size. There are smooth, longhair, and wirehair types of coat. Dachshunds can be red, black, brown, dappled, brindled, piebald, or any combination. The Dachshund Club of America has championed the dachshund breed since the late 1800’s. Queen Victoria of England was enthusiastic about the dachshund breed. This breed is part of the hound family and is classified as sixth in popularity in the American Kennel Club records. A dachshund can tend to put on weight as it ages. With their long backs, their diet must be watched carefully because the breed is prone to back problems. Care should be taken to limit their jumping and stair climbing as preventive back care. A dachshund is a loving and devoted companion!

Our family has had the privilege of living with two dachshunds. Our first was a miniature red smooth dachshund who lived to be fifteen years old. Our second miniature dachshund is a chocolate & tan smooth. She is about to celebrate her second birthday. In photos are the stories of Miss Dusty and Annie.
